Summary

* Duration: 14 hours and 51 minutes *

A young lawyer takes on the judge who is destroying her hometown - and ends up in jail herself。

Young attorney and single mother Martha Foster is in serious need of a fresh start。 So when a perfect job opportunity falls into her lap, Martha drops everything to move her and her 5-year-old son to charming Ava, Alabama, where even the Welcome Wagon comes out to greet them。

Instead of the bustling case load she expected to have as the new public defender, however, Martha is surprised to find herself with little to do, her legal aid rebuffed at every turn。 Judge Wyatt Pickens, the charismatic head of the local courts, urges Martha to enjoy her cushy new job。 But as she digs deeper into Ava’s methods of justice, Martha becomes more and more convinced that there’s something deeply twisted happening - and that Pickens himself has a hold on the town that goes well beyond the bench。

Sometimes the best education a lawyer can get is a short stretch of hard time。

This book was part of a dual publication with “Power of Attorney。”James Patterson is one of my go-to authors。 Pretty much anything I have read from him is at least a 4-5*。Martha Foster is an attorney and single mother of a 5 year old son with a heart condition。 When her law firm changes their benefits to a new plan which will make it impossible for her to provide adequate medical care for her son。 When she finds an ad for a public defender in Douglas County, Alabama, she immediately applies。 The This book was part of a dual publication with “Power of Attorney。”James Patterson is one of my go-to authors。 Pretty much anything I have read from him is at least a 4-5*。Martha Foster is an attorney and single mother of a 5 year old son with a heart condition。 When her law firm changes their benefits to a new plan which will make it impossible for her to provide adequate medical care for her son。 When she finds an ad for a public defender in Douglas County, Alabama, she immediately applies。 The salary and benefits package is literally an answer to a prayer。Upon arriving and checking in at the Courthouse, Martha is surprised that there are no cases for her to take on。 When she sees an old law school friend who is jailed for failure to appear。 Soon she determines that Judge Wyatt Pickens is abusing his authority and runs his courtroom like his personal playground。 Martha begins efforts to identify the irregularities and illegal practices。 Her efforts lands her in jail for contempt。 Martha files a request for removal for Judge Pickens。 She has two witnesses lined up: one a young inmate who has been abused and is unable to pay her court and jail boarding costs, and the widow of the previous public defender who killed himself just before Martha came to town。 The inmate backs out on the morning of the hearing and the young widow leaves after watching Martha’s cross examination。 Then a surprise witness comes forward。 This book is a tried and true legal thriller plot, somewhat predictable but a well constructed and well written story。 and I will also always recommend a Patterson to anyone who likes this genre。 。。。more

Jailhouse LawyerThe book was very well written and grabbed my attention instantly。 It was a real page turner and I could not put it down。 I live very near Montgomery So so places mentioned were very familar。 In fact the character of Judge Pickens remained me of a controversial judge in our state from a few yea rs back。 I would highly recommend this book to anyone who enjoys reading about the legal system and its sometimes not so ethical members。
